FORMAT FOR FINAL DRAFT OF STORIES, NARRATIVES, ESSAYS

1) Do not use a cover page, or a plastic folder. Use decent quality paper, a legible printer, black ink and a plain font, approximately 12 point. Leave a margin of approximately one inch all around. The goal is legibility and a professional look. If I can't read it easily, I won't read it at all.

2) Your name, address and phone # go in the upper left-hand corner of the first page.

3) The title of your story or essay, in CAPITAL LETTERS, not in quotes, should be about three inches down from the top of the page, and centered on the page.

4) Space down four lines from the title to the first line of your story.

5) Indent five spaces at the beginning of each paragraph.

6) Double space, or use space and a half. Do not space off extra lines between paragraphs unless there is a reason to do so.

7) Number your pages. The page # may appear in the upper right corner, or centered at the bottom of the page. The convention is not to number the first page.

8) Your last name should appear in the upper left corner of all pages except p. 1.

9) (Especially for EN3071) Voice. This is a course in the personal narrative. That means you are expected to write from your own experience, using the first person, "I." Try to write in your own natural voice (edited, of course, to get rid of the "ums" and "you knows." ) We will be working on "finding the voice" in class.

Before you turn your work in, proofread it carefully for spelling, punctuation, grammar and clarity. Is dialogue in quotes? Are tags connected to dialogue with commas instead of periods? Have you started a new paragraph to indicate a change in speakers? Have you used active verbs? Have you used more scene than summary? Have you chosen your nouns and verbs carefully, so as to cut down on the need for modifiers? And finally, have you achieved a good balance of narrative, description and dialogue?
